The government has proposed that the main opposition party nominate a candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed confirmed on Monday.
The move comes in line with the spirit of the July National Charter and political consensus.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the Prime Minister, Salahuddin said the government has verbally suggested to the opposition that they select a candidate for the Deputy Speaker position.
If the opposition agrees, the oath-taking will take place during the first session of Parliament, alongside the election of the Speaker.
The Home Minister emphasised that while the ruling party could have nominated candidates for both Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions, it has refrained from doing so to maintain political goodwill and uphold the principle of consensus.
On related matters, Salahuddin noted that delivering the President’s speech during the first parliamentary session is a constitutional tradition, though members have the right to decline if they wish.
He also said that 133 ordinances issued during the interim government must be presented in Parliament on the first day, and their fate-whether passed or rejected-will be determined through parliamentary discussion.
