The government has placed Md Aminul Islam, Assistant Commissioner of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), on forced retirement, citing “public interest” after he completed 25 years of service.
A letter from the Internal Resources Division of the Ministry of Finance, issued on Wednesday, confirmed the decision.
However, multiple senior NBR officials have revealed that Aminul’s forced retirement is linked to his involvement with the tax files of controversial businessman S Alam’s two sons.
Aminul Islam is accused of allowing Ashraful Alam and Asadul Alam Mahir, the sons of S Alam, to launder Tk 500 crore and evade Tk 75 crore in taxes.
Despite the allegations, the government has sent Aminul Islam into a dignified forced retirement without any major punishment.
