State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Chowdhury has informed the Parliament that the government is formulating a new policy for the registration and operation of online news portals.
The state minister made the announcement on Sunday during the second and first budget session of the 13th National Parliament. He was responding to a starred question tabled by Mostafizur Rahman Babul, the MP for Jamalpur-3.
In addition to the new policy, Chowdhury stated that the government is reviewing the inclusion of district-based newspapers with weak publication records in the Department of Film and Publication (DFP) list.
“We are examining whether those newspapers were listed following the proper procedures,” the state minister said, adding that disciplinary action will be taken against those found involved in any irregularities.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is currently in the process of drafting the guidelines to govern the registration and management of these online platforms.
Earlier in the session, Lutfur Rahman, the MP for Cox’s Bazar-3, expressed serious concerns regarding the dissemination of alleged misinformation and misleading information through various media outlets.
