The government has officially appointed 673 candidates from the 27th BCS examination to entry-level posts across various cadres, following recommendations from the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC), bringing an end to an 18-year wait for the candidates.
The appointments were formalised through a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on Thursday.
According to the notification, the appointments are based on the BPSC’s letter dated 5 November, 2005 and align with the National Pay Scale 2015, offering salaries ranging from Tk 22,000 to Tk 53,060.
All appointees are required to complete foundational training at the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre or other government-designated training institutes.
Upon completion, they will undergo professional and specialised training as determined by their respective departments. The probationary period for all recruits is two years, which may be extended by the government if necessary.
To maintain seniority, the notification specifies that the appointments will take effect retroactively from the date of the first notification issued to the batch. This ensures that their relative seniority remains intact, although no arrears of financial benefits will be provided.
Mohammad Abu Saleh, one of the newly appointed officers, welcomed the appointments, saying, “This recruitment finally ends the 18-year-long injustice we faced. We hope such disparities will not occur in our future careers.”
In the first viva voce of the 27th BCS examination, a total of 3,567 candidates were declared successful. However, in 2007, the then caretaker government cancelled the results, citing allegations of irregularities and corruption, and conducted a second viva voce.
Challenging the legality of the cancellation, the affected candidates filed a writ petition with the High Court. On 3 July, 2008, the High Court ruled that the cancellation of the first viva voce results was lawful. The petitioners later sought leave to appeal before the Appellate Division in February 2025.
Following further legal proceedings, the Appellate Division directed the government to appoint 1,137 candidates who had been deprived of appointment from the 27th BCS examination.
In line with the apex court’s directive, the Ministry of Public Administration has now issued a gazette appointing 673 candidates from among those eligible, marking a major step toward resolving a long-standing recruitment dispute that spanned nearly two decades.
