The Gono Odhikar Parishad has expressed deep concerns over the attempted attack and harassment of BNP and NCP leaders accompanying Chief Adviser of the Interim Government Muhammad Yunus, in New York.
The party has also condemned and protested against the incident. In a statement sent to the media on Tuesday, the party expressed its concerns regarding the attack.
On Monday, NYC time, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, NCP General Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Senior Joint Secretary Tasnim Jara, and several other political leaders traveled to New York to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Upon their arrival at John F. Kennedy International Airport, they were targeted by protests and harassment from supporters of the Awami League. During this time, Akhtar Hossain, the general secretary of the NCP, was pelted with eggs.
In response to the incident, the Gono Odhikar Parishad’s statement said, “The attack and harassment of the interim government’s entourage is not only a blatant attack on democratic values and human rights but also serves as a warning to anti-fascist forces.
“The terrorists of Awami League, who committed mass killings of the people of the country, have fled abroad. This party must face justice for its involvement in genocide. This attack not only harms the country’s image internationally but also creates unrest within the expatriate Bangladeshi community.”
Gono Odhikar Parishad pointed out, “We expect strict action from both the Bangladesh government and the US administration to prevent such incidents in the future. We demand the swift arrest of the terrorists involved and their swift prosecution.
“Previously, on 29 August, police and military-backed Awami thugs attacked leaders and activists of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, including President Nurul Haque Nur. A few days later, there was an attempted attack on Adviser Mahfuz in the US.”
The statement concluded, “These incidents are not isolated; there are clear similarities between them. Since no justice has been served in these cases, there is a risk of more such incidents happening in the future.
“We urge the government to take strict measures on these matters.”
