Barcelona missed their chance to reclaim top spot on Monday night, losing away to Girona on 17 February in La Liga, undone by a missed penalty, shaky defending and a ruthless late finish at the Montilivi.

The damage started before the break. Barcelona controlled territory and tempo but failed to land the punch, and when Lamine Yamal stepped up from the spot, he struck the post instead of the net. That miss hung over the night like a bad smell.

Barcelona pushed high and wide, with Raphinha stretching play and Ferran Torres arriving late in the box. They created chances but lacked precision, turning pressure into noise rather than goals.

Girona stayed patient and compact, soaking up pressure and springing forward with direct passes. Their approach invited Barcelona on, then punished the spaces left behind.

After the restart, Barcelona finally broke through. Jules Koundé delivered from the flank and Pau Cubarsí attacked the ball with purpose to head home. It should have settled them.

Instead, Barcelona switched off. Girona hit back within minutes as a simple low pass sliced open the defence and Thomas Lemar finished without fuss. The equaliser exposed how fragile Barcelona looked once the game turned chaotic.

From there, Girona smelled blood. Barcelona’s back line retreated, the midfield stopped protecting it, and the home side drove straight through the middle whenever they won the ball.

The decisive blow arrived late. Beltrán cut inside and fired a low diagonal shot beyond the keeper, a finish that matched Girona’s clarity and punished Barcelona’s indecision.

Barcelona threw bodies forward and even thought they had salvaged something, only to see an offside flag kill the moment. A late red card for Girona changed nothing.

The defeat leaves Barcelona on 58 points after 24 games, two behind league leaders Real Madrid. They leave Girona knowing the title race slipped further from their grasp not because they lacked chances, but because they lacked composure when it mattered.
