Ghorshal power plant and several other plants in Ghorashal, Narsingdi, have been temporarily shut down due to the earthquake.
The Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) disclosed this information on Friday afternoon.
It stated that various power plants across the country, including Ghorashal, Bibiyana, Banshkhali, Ashuganj, and Sirajganj, have been temporarily closed due to earthquake-related reasons. This has disrupted the power supply.
The PDB also said efforts are ongoing to normalise power generation and supply.
Earlier, at 10:38am, an earthquake was felt in the capital and various parts of the country. Its epicenter was in Madhabdi, Narsingdi. Its magnitude was 5.7 on the Richter scale. The earthquake lasted for a few seconds.
Although no major building collapse occurred in Narsingdi, the epicenter, cracks were seen in many buildings, houses, and various structures. This spread panic among the general public.
Meanwhile, at least 100 men, women, and children were injured as they rushed to exit buildings and sought treatment at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital.
As the condition of several of them was critical, they were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Additionally, the Ghorashal Thermal Power Plant in Palash Upazila has been damaged.
During the earthquake, three pedestrians were killed in Puran Dhaka’s Bangshal area when the railing of a five-storey building collapsed.
More than a hundred garment workers were injured in Gazipur after panicking during the earthquake and rushing downstairs from an industrial building at the same time.
