Russian missiles and drones struck Kyiv and surrounding areas overnight into Thursday, wounding at least 19 people, including two young children, Ukrainian authorities said.
The Kyiv City Military Administration reported strikes at more than ten locations in the capital and 33 sites damaged across the wider region, with a 10-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy among the injured, according to a statement on Telegram.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces responded overnight with strikes on targets inside Russia, including an oil refinery in Yaroslavl and a military airfield in the Rostov region.
He said the operation against the Yaroslavl refinery involved Ukraine’s Security Service, special operations forces, military intelligence and the Foreign Intelligence Service working jointly.
Writing on Telegram, he added that the airfield strike in Rostov had damaged an An-12 aircraft, two An-26s and three helicopters.
Ukraine’s air force said it shot down or jammed 131 Russian aerial targets overnight across the Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia and Odesa regions, in an assault combining ballistic and cruise missiles with drones and decoys.
In Odesa, seven people, including two children, were injured, the State Emergency Service said.
A residential block was hit between the 14th and 16th floors, while a separate private house was destroyed and others damaged nearby.
Separately, a Russian drone killed the captain of a Tanzanian-flagged civilian vessel in the Black Sea on Thursday morning and wounded three crew members, regional Odesa administration head Oleh Kiper said.
Writing on Telegram, Kiper said the strike had damaged the ship’s superstructure and deck, and accused Moscow of deliberately targeting Ukrainian ports and civilian merchant shipping.
Russia’s defence ministry said its forces had struck metallurgical and electronics plants, military-industrial facilities and energy and transport infrastructure.
It added that three bulk carriers and a ferry carrying supplies for the Ukrainian military had been hit in the port of Chornomorsk.
The overnight exchanges came as efforts to end Russia’s four-and-a-half-year full-scale invasion remain stalled, with disputes over territorial concessions in eastern Ukraine among the main obstacles.
Successive rounds of US-brokered talks have yet to produce a breakthrough, and Kyiv is also pressing partners for security guarantees as part of any settlement.
US President Donald Trump said in a social media post on Monday that Russia and Ukraine had mutually agreed to halt attacks on each other’s energy facilities, strikes that have caused serious supply disruption in both countries.
But in a CBS News interview on Tuesday, Zelenskyy disputed the claim, saying an energy truce had been discussed during a recent Kyiv meeting with Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, though he would only agree to such a deal once Russia stopped striking Ukrainian energy sites.
In a separate development, Ukraine said it had received the bodies of 252 fallen soldiers on Thursday as part of ongoing exchanges with Russia, according to the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.
Russia said the remains belonged to Ukrainian citizens, including military personnel, adding that Ukrainian law enforcement and forensic experts would carry out examinations to identify them.
