George and Amal Clooney have officially become French citizens, further cementing their long-standing ties to Europe and their increasingly private life away from Hollywood.
According to AFP, which cited an official government decree, the actor and the international human rights lawyer were recently granted French nationality. The development follows comments Clooney made earlier this month praising France’s strict privacy protections, particularly for children, during a radio interview.
The couple purchased a property on a former wine estate in the south of France four years ago and are understood to spend extended periods there. Amal Clooney, who is British-Lebanese, reportedly speaks fluent French, while Clooney has joked that he is still struggling with the language despite months of lessons.
In an interview with RTL radio, Clooney highlighted France’s approach to privacy as a key reason the country appeals to them, noting the absence of paparazzi outside schools as a decisive factor for their family life.
The Clooneys divide their time between several European homes, including residences in Lake Como and the UK, but France has increasingly become a central base for them.
Professionally, Clooney remains active on screen. He is set to appear in the upcoming Netflix feature film spin-off of ‘Call My Agent!’, joining a roster of high-profile guest stars. He has also recently been promoting ‘Jay Kelly’, a new Netflix film directed by Noah Baumbach and Emily Mortimer, in which he plays an actor reflecting on his life while travelling across Europe.
