A general diary (GD) has been filed with Shahbagh Police Station against three people including actresses Meher Afroz Shaon and Mahiya Mahi over allegations of derogatory comments and propaganda on social media centring the July uprising.
The GD was filed against another woman named Shanta Farzana.
Members of the “Rastro Sanglap Forum” lodged the GD on Friday morning, said Swapan, a sub-inspector of the Shahbagh Police Station.
It was alleged that the three made derogatory comments and carried out propaganda on social media about the July movement, its memory, and the sacrifices of the martyrs. According to the complainants, these activities created confusion and anger among the public.
The July uprising is a significant chapter in Bangladesh’s history, but misleading information was spread to undermine its importance and meaning, the complaint stated.
According to the GD, Shanta Farzana published a video on social media showing shoes being hurled or struck at the July Memorial. The complainants said the video triggered widespread public reaction.
Police said the complaint has been accepted, and an investigation will begin to verify its authenticity. If evidence supports the allegations, further action will be taken under the law, they added.
