A workshop to advance the establishment of a Technology Transfer Office at Gazipur Agricultural University was held on 5 February 2026 at the institution’s old auditorium in Gazipur, a press release from the university said. The event, titled “Establishing a Technology Transfer Office at GAK for Intellectual Property Protection, Dissemination of Innovation, and Commercial Application”, was supported by the Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation Project and overseen by Sub-Project Manager and agricultural development expert Professor Md Safiul Islam Afrad.
Professor GKM Mustafizur Rahman, vice-chancellor of Gazipur Agricultural University, attended as chief guest and emphasised the need to connect research outcomes with field application to drive impact beyond laboratories.
Professor M Moynul Haque, pro-vice-chancellor of the university, was present as special guest as researchers, faculty and students from multiple departments gathered to discuss the proposed office’s role in commercialising innovation.
The workshop’s resource person, Deputy Director (Patents) Md Habibur Rahman of the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks in Bangladesh, outlined practical considerations for intellectual property protection and the patent application process, and how legally secure research outputs can be monetised.
At the opening of the programme, Assistant Sub-Project Manager Mohammad Ziaul Haque delivered the welcome address, followed by a keynote paper from Professor Afrad, who detailed the objectives, proposed structure and future action plan for the Technology Transfer Office.
An open question and answer session, led by the vice-chancellor, featured engaged discussion on the office’s potential, institutional challenges and ways to leverage the university’s research at both national and international levels.
In his address Professor Mustafizur Rahman said research only fulfils its true purpose when it translates into improvements on farmers’ fields, entrepreneurial efforts and everyday life, and that the technology transfer office is expected to bridge the gap between researchers, industry and end users.
The workshop is seen as a significant milestone in the university’s strategy to turn research and innovation into practical application and commercial success.
