The government has decided to keep fuel prices unchanged in May despite a rise in the international market.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Division informed the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) of the decision through a letter on Thursday.
Under the current pricing framework, the retail price of per litre diesel is Tk115, kerosene Tk130, octane Tk140, and petrol Tk135.
This decision follows the price revision in April, which saw the rates for diesel, petrol, octane, and kerosene increase by approximately 15 to 20 Taka per litre. While the initial period of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East triggered concerns regarding supply, the market situation at filling stations across the country has since stabilised, and consumer distress has eased.
However, the ministry noted that the international oil market continues to experience volatility due to the geopolitical climate.
The current pricing structure in Bangladesh operates under a dual framework. BERC is responsible for determining the prices of jet fuel used in aviation and furnace oil used in power plants.
In contrast, the prices for diesel, kerosene, petrol, and octane are set through executive orders issued by the Energy and Mineral Resources Division.
Since March 2024, the government has implemented an automated pricing mechanism designed to align domestic fuel prices with international import costs.
The latest decision to hold prices steady for May is a continuation of this policy, following the effective implementation of the new rates established in April.
