Four more people have died from dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease spread by the Aedes mosquito, across the country in the past 24 hours till 8am on Thursday.
This brings the total number of dengue-related deaths this year to 259, according to a report released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday.
Among the latest fatalities, two occurred in Dhaka, and one each in Sunamganj and Mymensingh. The DGHS report also stated that 803 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country during the period.
Of these, 285 patients were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka city, 147 in areas of Dhaka Division outside the city corporations, 112 in Barishal Division, 97 in Chattogram, 49 in Khulna, 49 in Mymensingh, 37 in Rajshahi, 17 in Rangpur, and 10 in Sylhet.
So far this year, a total of 63,170 patients have been hospitalised with dengue across the country. As of October 23, 64.6% of dengue patients were male and 35.4% female.
In comparison, from January to December 2024, Bangladesh recorded 101,214 dengue cases and 575 deaths. The previous year, 2023, saw the country’s worst outbreak on record, with 321,179 hospitalizations and 1,705 deaths due to dengue.
