Police have arrested five individuals, including two former leaders of the District Swechasebak Dal, in connection with a burglary at the residence of a judicial couple in Jamalpur. The suspects were sent to jail by a court on Friday.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Nilufa, 32, Hawa Begum, 30, Chan Mia alias Kalachan, 50, Sumon Mia, 39, and Nazmul Ibn Hossain alias Biplob, 39. Amongst them, Sumon Mia is the former relief and rehabilitation secretary of the District Swechasebak Dal, while Biplob served as the former assistant organising secretary.
The victims, Ahmadul Kabir Sakil and Nusrat Jerin Jeni, are both Civil Judges at the Jamalpur District and Sessions Judge Court. They reside in a rented house in the Amlapara area of the town.
According to the case statement, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon. Sakil had gone to see off his wife at 3pm and, upon returning home at 8pm, discovered that the window grill of the bedroom had been cut. The burglars had broken open the almirah and fled with Tk1 lakh in cash, gold jewellery, and a diamond ring, with the total value of the stolen goods estimated at Tk1,917,983.
Following the incident, the acting administrative officer of the court, AKM Sorowar Jahan Siddiki, filed a case with Jamalpur Police Station the next day.
Police apprehended Nilufa, a domestic worker at the building, on Thursday night. Based on information gleaned from her, the authorities subsequently arrested Hawa Begum, a domestic worker at the judge’s residence, and the three other suspects.
Jamalpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Noor Mohammad said the suspects confessed to their involvement during preliminary interrogation. Furthermore, Nilufa has provided a confessional statement in court under Section 164.
Commenting on the arrests, the Member Secretary of the District Swechasebak Dal, Monjurul Karim Sumon, clarified that the arrested individuals were leaders of the previous committee and are not currently affiliated with the organisation.
