The bodies of five members of the same family who were brutally killed in Kapasia, Gazipur, were buried on Sunday in Paikandi village of Gopalganj Sadar upazila, as relatives and locals demanded the swift arrest and maximum punishment of the accused.
The deceased were laid to rest side by side in the family cemetery after funeral prayers. The wailing of relatives cast a shadow of grief over the area.
The deceased have been identified as Sharmin Begum (32), her brother Rasul Mia (22), and Sharmin’s three daughters – Mim (14), Habiba (10) and Faria (2). Their ancestral home is in Gopalganj Sadar upazila.
The main accused, Sharmin’s husband Furkan Mia, remains at large.
When the vehicle carrying the bodies arrived in the village around 6am, a heartbreaking scene unfolded. Hundreds of people from surrounding areas gathered to see the deceased for the last time.
According to police and relatives, the bloodied bodies were recovered from a house in Rautkandi village of Kapasia upazila on Saturday morning. It is believed the killings took place late on Friday night.
The matter came to light when Forkan Mia himself called relatives the next morning to inform them of the killings.
Arz Sheikh, uncle of Sharmin, said, “Upon receiving the news, we went to Gazipur. There we saw that everyone had been brutally killed. Sharmin was tied to a window grill and killed. This scene is beyond words. We demand the highest punishment for the killer Forkan.”
Relatives believe that sleeping pills were mixed with food to render everyone unconscious before they were killed.
A brother-in-law of Sharmin said that Rasul’s body was found on a bed, while the children’s bodies were found on the floor. Meat and rice pudding were cooked in the house that night, he added.
Sharmin’s father, Sahadat Molla, has filed a murder case as the plaintiff at Kapasia police station. Furkan Mia has been named as the main accused, along with four to five other unnamed individuals.
