A truck driver was killed and his helper seriously injured after a train rammed into a coal-laden truck at Bhangagate area of Abhaynagar upazila in Jashore district on Sunday.
The incident occurred at around 12:30 pm on Sunday in front of the Akij Resources coal depot in Masharhati village, along the Jashore-Khulna railway line.
The deceased, identified as Monowar Hossain from Kaliganj in Jhenaidah, died on the spot. The injured helper, Rayhan, was rescued by locals and rushed to the Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Witnesses reported that the impact of the collision threw Monowar from the truck onto the tracks, where he died instantly. The accident caused a disruption in train services on the route for approximately one hour.
Local motor worker leader and truck driver Noor Sheikh noted, “Trucks need to cross this railway line to load coal from Akij Resources’ depot. However, due to the unprotected crossing, accidents occur frequently. Today, we lost a fellow worker. There is an urgent need to appoint a gatekeeper and ensure safety here immediately.”
Yasir Arafat, the station master at Nowapara Railway Station, confirmed that the “Mahananda Express,” bound for Jessore, collided with the empty truck at the unprotected crossing.
He stated that the driver’s body had been recovered, and legal proceedings were underway. Train services on the route have now resumed.
