FIFA has fined the football federations of Norway and Italy for fan trouble during recent World Cup qualifying games against Israel.
The international body released a statement on Thursday. It said fans caused disturbances during the playing of Israel’s national anthem. Supporters entered the pitch and clashed with security staff in both matches. One game took place in Oslo and the other in Udine, Italy.
FIFA fined Italy 12,500 Swiss francs. Norway must pay 10,000 Swiss francs.
The governing body also released a list of disciplinary cases. It said the man who entered the field during Norway’s 5–0 win over Israel has a long history of interrupting major matches. FIFA noted he has done this for around 20 years, including at past World Cup finals.
FIFA added that the charges did not include waving Palestinian flags or chanting slogans at the stadiums, although fans suppose that is not the case.
