BNP-nominated candidate for Kishoreganj-4 senior lawyer and politician Fazlur Rahman was relieved of a contempt of court allegation on Monday after submitting an unconditional apology to the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1).
The three-member tribunal bench, led by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mazumder and comprising Justices Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury, presided over the hearing.
Accompanied by a team of lawyers, Fazlur appeared at the court around 11am, submitting all required academic and Bar Council certificates. The tribunal had previously, on November 30, sought clarification on whether Fazlur held a valid legal license.
The matter arose after ICT prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim lodged formal complaint on 26 November over remarks Fazlur made during a televised talk show, questioning the tribunal’s formation and credibility.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajol, representing Fazlur, said, “He is a senior lawyer, politician, and freedom fighter. We have submitted a written explanation regarding his statements.”
The BNP leader also personally offered an unconditional apology, expressing respect for the tribunal and pledging to exercise caution in the future.
Chief Prosecutor Md Tajul Islam was present during the hearing. The tribunal accepted Fazlur’s explanation and officially cleared him of the contempt charges.
