BNP leader and Supreme Court senior advocate Fazlur Rahman has submitted a written plea seeking unconditional pardon before the International Crimes Tribunal-1 over allegations of contempt of court related to Sheikh Hasina’s verdict.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam confirmed the development during a press briefing at the tribunal premises on Wednesday.
The move comes after the tribunal filed a contempt case against Fazlur Rahman on 26 November, citing remarks he made during a television talk show.
In the programme, he reportedly questioned the formation of the tribunal and claimed that justice could not be served by the current judges, suggesting internal bias.
Earlier, on Sunday, Tribunal Chairman Justice Golam Mortuza Majumdar had directed Fazlur Rahman to appear in person by 8 December to explain his statements. During that hearing, the chairman emphasised that any statement undermining the tribunal could fall under the offence of sedition. Questions were also raised regarding Fazlur Rahman’s legal licence.
Fazlur Rahman’s written application now seeks unconditional apology in connection with the contempt allegations. The hearing about this matter is scheduled for Monday, 8 December.
