Former Madaripur-3 lawmaker Abdus Sobhan Mia Golap was shown arrested in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and sent to jail on Sunday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order after the defence counsel sought the court’s approval for arrest and detention.
Golap was produced before the court on the day. Lawyer Shahidul Islam told the court that the case was filed on 19 March, but Sobhan Golap had not been formally arrested or detained until now.
He urged the court to record the arrest.
The ACC alleges that the former MP illegally acquired assets worth Tk68.32crore and kept them in his possession.
The case also states that Golap conducted irregular and suspicious transactions totaling Tk97.63crore through 51 bank accounts, including his own and those linked to his interests.
Earlier, police arrested Golap on 25 August, 2024, from a residence in West Nakhalpara.
Golap was elected as a member of parliament from Madaripur-3 in December 2018 on an Awami League ticket.
In December 2023, he was appointed as the publicity and publication secretary of the party’s central committee during the Awami League national conference.
