Detective Branch (DB) have arrested former Bogura-2 Member of Parliament and Jatiya Party presidium member Shariful Islam Jinnah from the capital in connection with multiple cases, including murder and explosives charges.
A team of the Bogura District Detective Branch (DB) arrested him in the Ramna area of Dhaka early on Friday, acting on intelligence information, police said.
Jinnah, a resident of the Mahasthangarh area in Shibganj upazila and son of the late Azimuddin, is accused in several cases, including a murder case filed over a killing during the anti-discrimination student movement.
Confirming the arrest, Bogura DB Officer-in-Charge Md Iqbal Bahar said a special team conducted the operation in an area under Ramna Police Station within Dhaka Metropolitan Police jurisdiction.
Police said a case was filed against him at Shibganj Police Station on 7 October last year under the Explosives Substances Act and relevant sections of the Penal Code, in which he had been absconding.
In total, 10 cases, including murder and explosives charges, are currently under trial against him.
Law enforcers said the process is underway to produce him before a court in connection with the cases.
Earlier in January last year, a court imposed a travel ban on Jinnah and his wife, Mohsina Akhter, following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission over allegations of acquiring undisclosed wealth and concealing, transferring, and converting assets.
