A court in Lalmonirhat on Tuesday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife over a family dispute.
Lalmonirhat District and Sessions Judge Md Haider Ali pronounced the verdict around 11:30am in the presence of Md Atiqul Islam. The court also fined him Tk20,000, with an additional six months in prison if he fails to pay the fine.
According to the case statement, Atiqul lived in the Gokunda Dararpar Munsitari area of Gokunda Union under Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station. He married Mitu Akter about two years before the incident, and they have a five-month-old daughter.
Atiqul had subjected Mitu to continuous physical and mental torture over various family disputes since their marriage.
A family dispute broke out on the night of 20 September, 2023. Atiqul punched Mitu in the head and face and then beat her severely with a hard plastic pipe in the courtyard. She died from her injuries on the spot, and Atiqul fled the house.
The following morning, neighbours heard the infant crying, entered the house and found Mitu’s body lying on a bed.
Mitu’s father, Md Islam, later filed a murder case with Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station as the plaintiff.
After the investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against Atiqul. The court framed charges on 4 July, 2024. The verdict was delivered after 17 witnesses testified during the trial.
