Ex-MP Badal sent to jail after arrest

Former lawmaker Faizur Rahman Badal has been sent to jail after his arrest in a case filed over an attack on protesters during the anti-discrimination movement.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam issued the detention order on Monday when he was produced before his court.

Badal, who was elected MP from Brahmanbaria-5 constituency on Awami League ticket, was arrested in a drive on Sunday night.

The court could not hold a remand hearing on the day as the main case file was unavailable. The hearing will take place once the file is received.

According to the case statement, police along with Chhatra League, Jubo League, and Awami League activists allegedly opened fire on demonstrators during a peaceful student and public rally on 19 July 2024, leaving many students injured.

Subsequently, on February 4 this year, an attempted murder case was filed with New Market Police Station in Dhaka over the incident.
