Nine independent candidates supported by the Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BGCS) are contesting in the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (Cucsu) elections despite no official panel being formed by the organisation.
Though BGCS has not formally announced a full panel of candidates, the student group has declared support for nine individuals running independently for various positions in the upcoming elections scheduled for October 15.
The candidates were introduced at a press conference held in front of the Cucsu building on Sunday afternoon.
Among them, Sultanul Arefin, BGCS’s senior joint convener, is vying for the post of Joint General Secretary. Ashraf Chowdhury, joint member secretary, is contesting for Career Development and International Affairs Secretary, while co-spokesperson Nowshin Tabassum Juthi is running for Women’s Welfare Secretary.
Other candidates include Ulfatur Rahman Rakib (joint convener) for Co-Literature and Publication Secretary, Md Naeem Biswas (member) for Co-Communication and Housing Secretary, and Md Tausif Yasar Rudra (organiser) for Co-Sports and Athletics Secretary.
Executive member posts will be contested by Tanvir Ontu (joint convener), Md Faisal Mia (joint member secretary), and Md Osman Gani (member).
In a written statement, BGCS convener Muntasir Mamun emphasised that while no formal panel has been declared, the organisation fully supports these independent candidates.
“We firmly believe that through independent candidates, principles of free thought, democratic spirit, and justice will prevail in the student union,” he said.
