Police have arrested an expelled Jubo Dal leader in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, after he allegedly entered a residence with a juvenile gang posing as Army and RAB personnel, demanded Tk50 lakh in extortion, and physically assaulted the occupants.

The arrested individual has been identified as Ibrahim Hossain, alias Tala Ibrahim, who was the Joint Convener of the Dhaka Metropolitan North Ward No 33 Jubo Dal.

According to police, Ibrahim was arrested during an operation conducted in the Dhaka Udyan area of Mohammadpur on Monday afternoon. The victim, Md Ratul, subsequently filed a case regarding the incident at Mohammadpur Police Station.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), a group of 15 to 20 people identifying themselves as members of the Army and RAB (SRB) entered a house on Road No 7 of Nabinagar Housing in Mohammadpur. The group held the residents hostage, assaulted and injured them, and forcibly snatched Tk12,000 in cash along with a wristwatch valued at Tk45,000 while demanding Tk50 lakh in extortion.

The FIR further noted that when the victim grew suspicious of the intruders’ identities and telephoned Mohammadpur Police Station, the perpetrators threatened him and quickly left the residence. As they exited, they claimed that Army and RAB vehicles were parked downstairs and were coming to arrest him. The intruders then rapidly fled, after which the victim went to Mohammadpur Police Station to lodge the case.

Local sources revealed that following 5 August, Ibrahim, alias Tala Ibrahim, had put padlocks on various business establishments whose owners failed to pay extortion money, forcing them to pay extortion to open the padlocks. Local sources also disclosed that he is a charge-sheeted accused in a widely discussed mass rape case in the Chand Udyan area of Mohammadpur.

Furthermore, it was noted by local sources that the Dhaka Metropolitan North Ward No 33 Jubo Dal committee was previously declared dissolved due to a breach of party discipline amidst various allegations and irregularities.

Confirming the arrest, Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Halim said that police conducted an operation to arrest the expelled Jubo Dal leader under an extortion case. The OC added that legal action is being processed against him, after which he will be produced before the court.
