A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted a three-day remand for former Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) official Lt Col (retd) Afzal Naser in connection with an attempted murder case involving a university student.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid issued the order following a hearing on a petition filed by the investigating officer of Kotwali Police Station, who had sought a seven-day remand.
According to case documents, Anik Kumar Das, a student of Jagannath University, who was shot and injured during an anti-discrimination protest on 16 July, 2024. The attack occurred near the university’s main gate as a procession moved toward the metropolitan sessions judge’s court area.
Anik was first taken to a nearby hospital for primary treatment and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. On 21 November, 2024, he filed a case with Kotwali Police Station, naming 253 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Earlier on Tuesday, Afzal was produced before the court after completing a three-day remand in a separate murder case filed with Uttara East Police Station.
The court initially ordered his transfer to jail upon the request of the investigation officer. He was subsequently shown arrested in Kotwali case, after which a fresh remand petition was filed.
After initial proceedings before Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter, the remand hearing was held in the court of Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid, where the prosecution argued in favor of further interrogation. The court ultimately granted a three-day remand.
Afzal was arrested on March 29 from a residence in Mirpur DOHS by members of the Detective Branch. Since his arrest, he has been shown arrested in multiple cases, including several murder charges filed at different thanas across the capital, and has undergone several rounds of remand for questioning.
