A Dhaka court has granted a fresh three-day remand for former DGFI director Afzal Naser Bhuiyan in a case over the killing of Mahmudul Hasan during the July uprising in the capital’s Uttara area.
Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain passed the order on Wednesday after police produced the accused before the court following the completion of his earlier two-day remand and sought a further seven-day custody for interrogation.
This marks the third phase of remand in the case.
Earlier, on 27 April, the same court had granted a two-day remand, while on 23 April, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah had approved a four-day remand.
According to police, Afzal Naser was arrested on 30 March, 2026, from his residence in Mirpur DOHS by a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
According to the case documents, the incident dates back to 5 August, 2024, when a procession during the anti-discrimination student movement came under attack and gunfire in Azampur area under Uttara East Police Station in Dhaka.
A youth named Mahmoudul Hasan, 26, was shot and later declared dead at Bangladesh Kuwait Maitree Government Hospital.
A murder case was filed on 26 September with Uttara East Police Station in connection with the incident.
