A Dhaka court on Thursday granted a five-day remand for Lieutenant General (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, the former director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), in connection with a murder case filed at Mirpur Model Police Station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Siddiq Azad passed the order following a hearing involving both the prosecution and the defence.

During the proceedings, Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor (PP) Omar Faruq Faruqi  represented the state, while Advocate Shahinur Rahman appeared on behalf of the accused.

Earlier, the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Kofil Uddin of the Detective Branch (DB) of police, produced the retired general before the court with a prayer for a seven-day remand.

He was detained from his residence in Mirpur DOHS late Wednesday night and subsequently taken to the DB office on Mintu Road in the capital.

According to the case statement, Delowar Hossain, 40, was present with students and members of the public in support of the anti-discrimination student movement at Mirpur-10 Fruit Market area in Dhaka on July 19, 2024.

At that time, 500 to 700 activists of Awami League affiliate organisations, including the named accused and unidentified others, allegedly opened indiscriminate fire from different directions under the instruction of detained suspect Sheikh Mamun Khaled, using both local weapons and foreign firearms, in an attempt to suppress the peaceful protest.

Delowar Hossain sustained bullet injuries and collapsed at the scene.

He was first taken to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in critical condition. As his condition worsened, he was later shifted to City Care General Hospital in Shyamoli on July 20 for better treatment.

He died while undergoing treatment on July 21.

The victim’s family later filed the case.
