A former BNP leader died after being pushed at a polling centre in Khulna on Thursday morning.
The deceased was Mahfuzzzaman Kochi, former office secretary of Khulna city BNP.
The incident took place at the Khulna Alia Kamil Madrasah centre.
BNP candidate, Nazrul Islam Manju, demanded that Abdur Rahim be taken into police custody.
He alleged that the madrasa principal had been working in favour of Jamaat-e-Islami within 400 yards of the polling centre.
“Principal Abdur Rahim was reportedly working for the rival polling team inside the Alia Madrasah centre. When Kachi protested, he and his assistant pushed him, causing fatal injuries,” Manju said.
Kachi was rushed to Khulna City Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Eyewitnesses noted a decline in voter turnout at the centre following the incident.
The deceased’s elder brother, Asaduzzaman Selim, said the family will discuss and decide the next steps regarding the tragedy.
Meanwhile, a source from Jamaat-e-Islami claimed Kachi died of heart disease.
