Ethel Caterham has proven that age is more than just a number. It’s a testament to resilience, curiosity, and the quiet strength of a life well-lived. On August 21 this year, she turned 116, earning her place in the Guinness World Records as the oldest living person on Earth.

Following the passing of Inah Canabarro Lucas on April 30, 2025, Ethel became the world’s oldest living woman. She was born on August 21, 1909, in the quaint English village of Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire. It was a time when the world was still powered by horses and telegrams.

Her lifetime spans two centuries and some of the greatest transformations in human history. From horse-drawn carriages to electric cars, and from crackling radios to smartphones, Ethel has seen it all. She lived through two world wars, the sinking of the Titanic, the first moon landing, and the digital revolution. Each era etches a new chapter into her remarkable story.

At 18, she worked as a nanny for a British family in India, courageously travelling alone by ship in 1927. She continued to drive her own car until the age of 97 and even survived the COVID pandemic at 110.

Beyond the milestones and historical events, Ethel has carried out life’s most enduring roles: as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her journey embodies the essence of a century lived with grace and courage.

Ethel Caterham’s life is not merely a record of years but a celebration of spirit. She reminds us that longevity is not just about counting birthdays, it’s about staying curious, connected and kind through all the seasons of time.
