Empowering women is key to advancing the country, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said on Tuesday. He also stressed the importance of making women self‑reliant.

He made the remarks while inaugurating the Family Card distribution programme at the T&T Playground near Karail slum in Banani, Dhaka. The prime minister’s wife, Zubaida Rahman, was present at the event.

“We want to stand by the people. We promised to introduce this card for women, and we also pledged to provide farmer cards. Just as women are receiving cards today, farmers will also be given cards in the same way,” he said.

Members of the cabinet, the prime minister’s advisers, and senior government officials attended the event.

The government has launched the Family Card on a pilot basis for female‑headed households. Each family will receive a monthly allowance of Tk2,500, disbursed through mobile wallets or bank accounts to ensure easy access from home.

In the first phase, 37,567 beneficiaries will receive the allowance. The government plans to gradually expand the programme to cover 4 crore families nationwide.
