A total of 1,097 families in Lama, Bandarban – one of the country’s most impoverished districts – received family cards under a new government initiative on Tuesday.

Residents of Fasiakhali Union were among those from 17 areas across nine districts to benefit from the programme on its opening day.

The cards were distributed during a ceremony held at the Lama Upazila Parishad auditorium. While handing over the cards to heads of female-led households, the Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, Dipen Dewan, emphasised that the initiative serves a broader purpose than just financial relief.

“This initiative is not merely financial assistance; our government’s primary goal is to empower women and bring them into the mainstream,” the minister said.

The event was attended by Sa Ching Prue Jerry, member of parliament for the Bandarban constituency; Shamim Ara Rini, deputy commissioner; and Abdur Rahman, superintendent of Police, alongside other government officials and public representatives.

The deputy commissioner noted that 1,097 families from Ward-2 of Fasiakhali Union have already been verified and included in the list for the initiative.
