The parliamentary election for Sherpur-3 (Sreebardi-Jhenaigati) constituency has been suspended following the death of the nominated candidate from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Alhaj Nuruzzaman Badal.
Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the development.
Nuruzzaman Badal died in the early hours of Wednesday at the age of 51.
Akhtar said the suspension is being enforced in line with the Representation of the People Order (RPO), 1972.
Under Article 17(1) of the RPO, if a valid candidate dies after the deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers but before polling is held, the election process in the concerned constituency must be immediately cancelled or postponed.
Following official confirmation of the death, the Returning Officer concerned will issue a public notice announcing the cancellation of election activities for the seat.
The Election Commission will later announce a fresh schedule for the Sherpur-3 polls, Akhtar said.
