Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) has become a global concern, and the Election Commission (EC) plans to establish a central cell to prevent AI-related misuse during elections.

“Misuse of AI is now a global problem. We want to prevent such misuse in the election. Therefore, we will set up a central cell to control misinformation and disinformation. Before that, we need your (experts’) opinions.”

He made the remarks while addressing a workshop on artificial intelligence as the chief guest at the Electoral Training Institute in the capital on Tuesday.

He further said, “Many things can happen during the night in an election. Especially, AI misuse can be more frequent at night. For that reason, we will have to work round the clock.

“We need to determine what kind of manpower can be employed in this task. Disinformation can come from anywhere. We need your advice on how we can respond to such information.”

The CEC also said, “Those of you who are here can give us specific suggestions. I do not want any guidelines here. This workshop will be effective for us.”

In his closing remarks, Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said, “AI has had negative impacts on various aspects of our lives.”

Four election commissioners, faculty members from various universities, technology experts, and election officials were present at the event.
