Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) has strongly condemned and protested the recent violence across the country centring on the death of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
The student body also said it will continue a “constitutional and united struggle” to realise Hadi’s vision, according to a statement issued by Ducsu on Friday night.
In the statement, Ducsu leaders expressed “strong condemnation and protest” over vandalism and arson attacks at the offices of national dailies Prothom Alo and The Daily Star in the capital, as well as the assault on New Age editor Nurul Kabir, following Hadi’s death.
Ducsu also strongly condemned vandalism and arson attacks at various high commission offices and cultural institutions, as well as the tragic incident in Mymensingh where a youth was beaten to death over allegations of hurting religious sentiment.
“Any trial for blasphemy must be conducted through law and the courts; taking the law into one’s own hands is in no way acceptable,” the statement said.
Ducsu also called for justice for those involved in Hadi’s death and urged people to remain patient and restrained while continuing constitutional movements until what it termed “terrorist Awami fascism and Indian hegemony” are uprooted.
“Everyone must remain alert and vigilant so that no conspiratorial group can tarnish the movement for justice through sabotage, violence or provocation,” it said.
Ducsu further urged the government to immediately take firm, effective and accountable measures to ensure the safety of journalists, editors and the media.
“There is no alternative to national unity to confront deep conspiracies aimed at destabilising the country. All conscious citizens are being called upon to unite to build a democratic, just and Insaaf-based state,” the statement added.
