Sakhawat Ali Khan, a retired professor from the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Dhaka University (DU), died on Sunday night at a hospital in the capital. He was 85.
He is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, relatives, students, and numerous well-wishers.
His namaz-e-janaza was held at the Dhaka University Central Mosque on Monday morning. He will be buried in Dhanuya village in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi.
The funeral was attended by DU Vice Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Mamun Ahmed, Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman, Executive Editor Sajjad Sharif, along with faculty members, students, and well-wishers.
In a condolence message, VC Niaz expressed deep sorrow, noting that Sakhawat made an unparalleled contribution to the development, expansion, and modernisation of journalism education and research in Bangladesh.
Beyond academia, he also played a significant role in advancing the journalism profession. His contributions will be remembered.
The VC prayed for the departed soul and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
Family sources said Sakhawat suffered a stroke on 12 February. After receiving treatment in hospital for several days, he was taken home. However, he fell ill again on Sunday night and was taken back to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
