Robert Downey Jr. and Timothée Chalamet have floated the idea of turning December 18 into Hollywood’s next major box office moment, as their upcoming blockbusters arrive in cinemas on the same day.
Speaking at a special screening of Chalamet’s A24 film ‘Marty Supreme’ in Los Angeles on Wednesday, the two actors joked about branding the shared release date of ‘Dune: Part Three’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as “Dunesday”. Downey told the audience that the nickname was their attempt to create a sense of shared excitement around the simultaneous launches.
The playful suggestion reflects growing industry interest in coordinated releases following the success of Barbie and Oppenheimer in 2023, which dominated global conversation and combined to earn nearly $2.5 billion worldwide. Studios have since tried to replicate that momentum, with mixed results.
Both films set for December 18 arrive with considerable expectations. Avengers: Doomsday follows the Marvel franchise’s most successful chapter, Avengers: Endgame, which remains one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Meanwhile, Dune: Part Two earned more than $700 million globally, cementing Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation as one of the defining science fiction series of the decade.
Whether “Dunesday” catches on remains to be seen, but the overlap has already sparked conversation and highlights how box office competition can sometimes turn into collaboration.
