Some Islami Chhatra Shibir leaders raised concerns Thursday over the absence of dope tests for candidates in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) elections. Mazharul Islam, GS candidate of the Shibir-backed ‘Shomonnito Shikkharthi Jot’ panel, expressed confusion over the Election Commission’s process, highlighting that candidates were voting despite not receiving their dope test results. He also questioned the clarity of rules regarding access to polling agent centers.
Despite these issues, Islam commended the overall voting process, expressing confidence that students would choose morally upright candidates.
Other candidates, including Sheikh Sadi, vice president candidate from Chhatra Dal, praised the election’s security arrangements, with over 1,500 police and security personnel deployed. Independent GS candidate Shakil Ali emphasized the challenge of reaching all students across the halls.
The highly anticipated election, marking the return of JUCSU elections after 33 years, began at 9:00 am and will continue until 5:00 pm, with results announced at 7:00 pm at the University Senate building.
This year, JUCSU has 11,919 registered voters, with voting taking place at 224 booths across 21 halls. The election is overseen by 67 polling officers, with hall wardens acting as returning officers.
