A shooting at a high school in suburban Denver, Colorado, left two students injured before the shooter died from self-inflicted wounds, authorities reported.
The incident occurred around 12:30pm (GMT -6) at Evergreen High School in Evergreen, located about 30 miles west of Denver in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, reports AP/UNB.
Gunshots were fired both inside and outside the school, and responding law enforcement officers located the shooter within five minutes of arriving at the scene, according to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jacki Kelley.
None of the responding officers discharged their weapons during the incident, Kelley added. Over 100 police officers from nearby areas rushed to the school to assist in the response.
The injured students were initially listed as critical, according to St. Anthony Hospital CEO Kevin Cullinan. Their ages have not been made public. By later in the day, one of the students was reported to be in stable condition with injuries that Dr. Brian Blackwood, the hospital’s trauma director, said were not life-threatening. Further details about their condition were not disclosed.
The high school, with more than 900 students, is set amid a largely wooded area, approximately a mile from the heart of Evergreen, a town with a population of 9,300.
Following the incident, anxious parents gathered outside a nearby elementary school to wait to reunite with their children.
