Renowned Lalon singer Farida Parveen has been placed on life support following a sudden deterioration in her health. On Wednesday afternoon, she was moved to ventilation support at Universal Medical College Hospital in Mohakhali.
Her elder son, Imam Nimeri, told reporters, “She was initially in the ICU, and doctors were considering transferring her to a cabin. However, her condition worsened from Wednesday morning, prompting the medical team to place her on ventilation support.”
Hospital Managing Director Ashish Kumar Chakraborty confirmed that Farida Parveen is now on a ventilator machine, commonly referred to as life support. “She cannot breathe on her own, and her blood oxygen level has dropped. Her blood pressure is extremely low and not improving even after medication. If her blood pressure rises, there may be some hope; otherwise, there is a risk of a heart attack,” he said.
The 71-year-old singer has long suffered from multiple health issues, including kidney problems and diabetes, and undergoes regular kidney dialysis. Earlier this year, she was hospitalized for 13 days in February due to breathing difficulties, followed by another ICU admission on July 5, where she remained for nearly two weeks. Most recently, she was admitted again on September 2.
Farida Parveen, a recipient of the Ekushey Padak (1987) and Japan’s Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize (2008), has made significant contributions to the field of music. She has also won the National Film Award for her work.
Around 16 years ago, she founded the Achin Pakhi Music Academy, dedicated to promoting Lalon music. However, the academy has frequently faced closures due to her health issues and financial difficulties.
