Doctor Who is set to make its return this August through an ambitious multi-platform event, offering fans fresh stories while the long-running BBC series remains without a new television lead.

Earlier this year, plans for the 2026 Doctor Who Christmas Special were cancelled, while showrunner Russell T Davies confirmed he would step down. The role of the Doctor has remained vacant since Ncuti Gatwa, who portrayed the Time Lord from 2023 to 2025, exited the series, leaving fans waiting to learn who will take over next.

BBC Studios has now revealed further details about Doctor Who: Circuit Breaker, which launched on 25 June. First announced in 2025, the Whoniverse event unfolds through audio dramas, books, comics, games and digital stories, with each chapter contributing to a single overarching narrative, BBC reports.

According to the official Doctor Who YouTube channel, the event follows “a single, escalating crisis” that unfolds across multiple formats, with each instalment revealing new clues, fresh dangers and another side of the Time Lord.

The project brings together several Doctor Who partners, including Titan Comics, Doctor Who Magazine, BBC Audiobooks, East Side Games, Puffin, BBC Books and Big Finish, to expand the franchise’s universe throughout the summer.

One of the most anticipated releases arrives on 6 August with Castling, a new game developed by East Side Games and written by Mario Mentasti. The game marks the return of Jo Martin, who first appeared during the Chris Chibnall–Jodie Whittaker era as the previously unknown Fugitive Doctor.

In Castling, Martin’s Doctor pilots the TARDIS while confronting the event’s central crisis. Her return has fuelled speculation among fans over whether she could eventually become the franchise’s next full-time Doctor, although no official announcement has been made.

The full storyline of Castling remains under wraps. However, its title, taken from a chess move, has prompted speculation that strategy could play an important role in the adventure. Fans will find out when the game launches on 6 August, offering the latest chapter in the evolving Doctor Who universe.
