Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Ejaj inaugurated the newly constructed ‘Mukti Toran’ (“Freedom Arch”) on the Mirpur-10 to Mirpur-2 road on Saturday. The event took place in front of the Mirpur Swimming Complex at noon.
The arch commemorates the ‘July Movement’ and honours the sacrifices of the city’s student activists.
Earlier, on 4 November, two other arches were inaugurated in Dhaka – one on Justice Syed Mahbub Morshed Road in Agargaon and another near Badda Buddhist Temple on Pragati Sarani.
Speaking at the ceremony, Administrator Mohammad Ejaj said, “This arch will stand as a symbol of the courage and sacrifice of Mirpur’s student activists.” “It will remind the new generation of the bravery of those who fought against fascism during the July Movement” he added.
After the inauguration, DNCC administrator also inspected an operation to remove illegal banners and festoons in the Mirpur area. He said, “Fines are being imposed for using illegal banners and festoons. From now on, violators will face heavy financial penalties.”
The Administrator then visited the 60-foot connecting road under construction in the area. Expressing satisfaction at the progress, he said, “We hope to open this road for public use by Victory Day.”
The inauguration was attended by DNCC Chief Engineer Brigadier General Md Moin Uddin, Regional Executive Officer Md Saiful Islam of Zone-2, and officials and staff from various levels of DNCC.
