Paddle steamer PS Mahsud will be a unique addition to Bangladesh’s heritage and river-based tourism, said Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hussain on Saturday.
He said the historic vessel will begin regular tourism service on the Dhaka–Barishal river route from next Friday.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the century-old steamer, which is being relaunched on domestic river routes to showcase Bangladesh’s river traditions to the new generation.
The government has taken the initiative to restore and reintroduce PS Mahsud as a tourism vessel to preserve the country’s century-old riverine heritage.
On the occasion, Chief Adviser’s Special Envoy on International Affairs Lutfey Siddiqi and other senior officials of the government were present.
The adviser said Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus expressed his delight over the decision to repair and relaunch the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC)–owned steamer as a pleasure cruise.
“PS Mahsud is not just a vessel; it is a living symbol of Bangladesh’s culture and heritage. We want the new generation to see that history up close,” he said.
He added that the government also plans to renovate several other old steamers—PS Ostrich, PS Lepcha and PS Turn—to preserve river traditions and expand the potential of river-based tourism.
Shipping Ministry Secretary Nurunnahar Chowdhury said the relaunch will attract tourists from home and abroad. She said foreign tourists will be able to enjoy local cuisine, Bangla music and other cultural experiences on board.
