Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) conducted an eviction drive at Uttara North and Uttara Center Metro Rail stations on Tuesday morning, removing illegal hawkers and their makeshift shops from underneath the stations.
The drive, led by three magistrates, ran from 10:30am to 12pm under the direction of DMTCL Managing Director and Additional Secretary Md Shaqawatul Alam, according to a press release.
The hawkers were warned against engaging in any illegal activities or setting up shops under the metro stations in the future, and they made a pledge to the magistrates to comply, the release said.
Shopkeepers adjacent to the stations were instructed to dispose of waste and garbage in designated areas to prevent environmental pollution. All those present pledged to maintain cleanliness and discipline in the metro rail area.
The eviction drive was attended by DMTCL Executive Magistrates Mohammad Shahjahan Ali, Md Zahidul Islam, and Nazrul Islam; DMTCL DGM (Security) Major Mohammad Zakir Siddiqui (retired); along with Turag Police Station, MRT Police, Ansar members, and metro rail security personnel.
DMTCL authorities said such drives will continue in the future to maintain safety, discipline, and cleanliness at metro rail stations.
