Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced that auto-rickshaws will be relocated from metropolitan areas once rehabilitation measures are in place.
He added, “The initiatives taken to restore discipline in Dhaka’s traffic system will show results within the next few months.”
Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Tuesday afternoon, the home minister also confirmed that amendments to the Narcotics Control Act will be introduced soon. “Although individuals involved in drugs and gambling are often arrested, legal loopholes allow them to secure bail. The law is being amended to prevent this,” he said.
Regarding Mohammadpur, described as a crime-hotspots area, Salahuddin noted that its problems cannot be resolved overnight. “However, law enforcement continues operations, and raids will be conducted systematically, similar to those in Jungle Salimpur,” he added.
“The identity of a criminal is that of a criminal. No matter how powerful a terrorist is, they will not be spared,” the minister warned.
On the murder of child Ramisa in Pallabi, he said the investigation has concluded and a chargesheet has been submitted to court. “Evidence is under judicial review, and no one named ‘Dollar’ was found involved,” he clarified.
Answering questions on border “push-in, push-back” incidents and killings, he stated, “If someone crosses a country’s border illegally and legal action is taken by that country, it cannot be termed a border killing. However, if law enforcement from another country enters our territory and commits a killing, that is a border killing.”
The home minister added that the upcoming Director General-level conference between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Border Security Force (BSF) will discuss overall security, including drug smuggling.
He also assured that those responsible for the recent deaths of six children at Ad-Din Hospital in Moghbazar and the attacks on journalists will face action following investigation.
