Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has said there is no specific security threat ahead of the 23 June founding anniversary of the Awami League, though law enforcement agencies remain on alert.
Speaking at a briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road on Friday morning, DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Nazrul Islam said necessary security measures have already been put in place to ensure public safety.
“23rd June is the founding anniversary of a political party. We are on alert centring the day,” he said while responding to journalists’ questions.
He added that security checkpoints are active at various locations across the capital and will continue as part of ongoing efforts to maintain law and order.
Responding to a query regarding alleged extortionist “Kalya Faruk,” who was arrested in Mohammadpur and later released on bail before reportedly resuming extortion activities, Nazrul Islam said issues related to bail fall under the jurisdiction of the court.
“Whether they will punish someone or not is a matter for the court. But we will continue to do our job,” he said.
The DMP official further said that police will continue drives against terrorists, drug traffickers and extortionists, and ensure they are brought before the court for legal proceedings.
