Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, BPM (Service), on Tuesday inaugurated an AI camera-based traffic enforcement and vehicle monitoring system on Lake Road in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.
The commissioner launched the initiative as chief guest at the Traffic Tejgaon Division office at 11:00am. He also visited the AI camera control room following the inauguration.
Speaking at the event, Mosleh Uddin said the current democratic government had revitalised the traffic signal system and expanded the use of digital technology after assuming office through the 13th parliamentary election.
He said DMP now manages traffic using data-driven systems and artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled cameras instead of conventional methods.
The commissioner said traffic congestion had eased significantly after the introduction of strategic diversion systems at key intersections across the capital and the closure of unnecessary crossings. He added that AI cameras had also encouraged motorists to stay within lanes and obey traffic signals, resulting in visible improvements in traffic management.
Under the new system, AI cameras will automatically detect vehicles exceeding speed limits, making dangerous lane changes, riding motorcycles without helmets or parking illegally. The command centre will then initiate digital e-prosecution cases through an automated and accurate process. Vehicle owners or drivers will be able to settle the cases through a transparent procedure.
He said the system would eliminate the need for traffic police to stop vehicles on roads physically, reducing risks to officers on duty.
DMP said the automated camera network would be expanded gradually to other parts of the capital.
The police also sought the cooperation of city residents, transport owners and drivers to help transform Dhaka into a disciplined and safe smart city.
