Dhaka College teachers walked out of a consultation meeting on Sunday following tensions with students over the framework and administrative structure of the newly established Dhaka Central University on Sunday.
The meeting was held at the Shaheed ANM Najib Uddin Khan Khurram Auditorium of Dhaka College in the presence of university Vice-Chancellor Md Nurul Islam.
Sources said disagreements emerged between teachers and students shortly after the discussion began, prompting several faculty members to leave their seats and walk out of the auditorium.
The vice-chancellor attempted to defuse the situation and urged the teachers to return to the meeting.
Addressing the Dhaka College principal, Nurul Islam said the teachers may have received a “wrong message” about the purpose of the discussion.
“The message they received is not correct. Let the students speak today, as they were the ones who launched the movement,” he said.
The vice-chancellor said he also wanted to hear the teachers’ views.
He added that government directives allowed any incorrect information presented by students to be formally identified and reported to the ministry and other relevant authorities.
Dhaka Central University was established this year as Bangladesh’s 57th public university by integrating seven government colleges in the capital.
The move followed a prolonged student movement and the passage of the university’s establishment law in parliament on 10 April.
