Actor Imran Khan was among more than 400 people detained in Mumbai during protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, as police moved to prevent gatherings held without permission, reports India Today.
The demonstrations were organised in support of the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) protest over alleged voter-list manipulation and changes linked to Form 6, used for voter registration.
At least 200 people, including members of activist Tushar Gandhi’s organisation, Hum Bharat Ke Log, and supporters of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), were detained at August Kranti Maidan earlier in the day. Police also detained workers of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi near Hutatma Chowk.
An official said authorities were preparing to register a first information report (FIR) against those detained.
Protester Rubaid Bhojani alleged that police had taken demonstrators into custody “very brutally”. The protesters demanded Kumar’s resignation, accusing him of failing voters.
Tushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, was detained in Bandra and taken to DN Nagar police station. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray later visited the station, where supporters had gathered.
Police tightened security at several locations, including Shivaji Park, to prevent further demonstrations. Authorities cited a Bombay High Court order stating that August Kranti Maidan was not a designated protest site.
The CJP also called for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
