A 35-year-old power worker died of electrocution on Saturday while attempting to disconnect illegal electricity lines in the Karail slum of the capital’s Banani area.
The deceased, identified as Hyder Hossain, served as an assistant lineman at the Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (DESCO).
The incident occurred at approximately 2:30pm on Saturday. Hyder was rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in a critical state by relatives and colleagues, where attending doctors pronounced him dead at 4:30pm.
The victim’s brother-in-law, Shukkur Gazi, who also works at DESCO, reported that Hyder was part of a four-to-five-member team tasked with removing illegal power connections in the Karail slum. Hyder became entangled in live electrical wires during the operation, leading to the fatal shock.
Hyder hailed from Purbaphulhar village in the Rajapur police station area of Jhalakathi district. He had been residing in North Badda with his wife and two children.
DMCH police camp In-charge Inspector Md Faruk said the body is being held at the hospital morgue for an autopsy. The matter is currently under investigation by the Banani police.
